Lakehills freelance photographer Ken Lane just posted his series of sports photos from last night’s Bandera Bulldogs vs. Llano Yellowjackets basketball games, freshmen, JV and varsity.

Here’s his commentary on the games:

I arrived in time to shoot the last half of the freshman game and a bit of the second quarter. Llano struggled to keep up with Bandera’s freshman and when the game ended, Bandera freshman had 40 to Llano’s 17.

The JV game was a stronger rout although the scores were somewhat closer, 60-42. Llano had a couple players throwing elbows, and fortunately it was caught by the refs; Llano paid the piper.

The Varsity game was much closer. The lead swapped back and forth several times with neither side able to draw away by more than four points. Within the last five minutes of the game Llano looked like they were not going to be able to stop Bandera from winning if they didn’t up their game.

Instead they chose to get very physical. Bandera has a hard time stretching their lead as every time they tried for a lay-up under the goal, Llano applied a “lay-on-top” of Bandera. Incredibly, the referee didn’t seem to see a problem with that.

At one point, a Llano player so soundly clobbered Jeffrey Jensen when he was going up for a lay-up that he temporarily came out of the game and apologized to the Bandera coaches. That didn’t keep another Llano player from grabbing a Bandera jersey and trying to physically throw the player in it out of bounds. Yeah, that didn’t go over too well either.

If those events weren’t enough, a scramble for the ball almost came to fisticuffs due to the manner in which the Llano player went after the ball.

Too physical for high school ball and unprofessional if done in the pros.

With 31 seconds left in the varsity game and a score of 38-36 in favor of Bandera, Llano fouled Jensen, who put two points on the board. Llano immediately fouled him again and Jensen put one of two points on the board.

Bandera held Llano to 36 and the game ended 41-36, Bandera.

Missed me?

As you can see from the surrounding photos, headway has been made in the “camera situation” at the newspaper.

By hook or by crook, I’m back to making the best photos I’m capable of, my hands untied and camera gear ready to rock after a prolonged hibernation.

You can view all of my photos from yesterday’s Bandera Bulldogs vs. Ingleside Mustangs varsity football playoff game over at the Bulletin’s DotPhoto.com account or in the Bandera.net Photo Gallery (pro tip: Bandera.net is faster, the images are bigger and higher quality and you don’t need a degree in Computer Science just to look at them).

Below are some of my personal picks from the gallery. Let me know what you think: comment below, hit me up on Twitter @BanderaOutlaw, e-mail me at James@team-outlaw.net, or call/text me at 830-688-1564.

My friends, it is so good to be back.

Bandera QB Cole Hubble gets airplay on YouTube

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

You can check out video of Bandera Bulldogs starting quarterback Cole Hubble’s 105-yard punt return against the Lago Vista Vikings on YouTube courtesy of TexasPreps.net.

In January National Prep Network posted a junior-year highlight reel of Hubble from his 2008 season – to the tune of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” no less! You can see me on the sidelines with camera in hand in at least half the included clips. And of course Mrs. Sandy Jennings jumping and waving with every touchdown.

We need more video of Bulldog, Bobcat and Buffalo sports online!

Bandera Bulldogs featured in Austin American-Statesman

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

090930statesmanI’m a week behind, but I just came across the Austin American-Statesman’s coverage of the Bandera-Wimberley football game from Sept. 18.

Great write-up and a set of 10 very nice photos from Statesman intern Jordan Smothermon. He was working the sidelines hard throughout the game to get a set of 10 top-quality shots. I got to chat with him briefly and he said he has been a sports shooter since he first took up professional photography.

Where do you guys get your Bandera, Medina and Utopia sports story and photo fix? In the papers or online? Where? Leave a comment below on this blog post, hit me up on Twitter @banderaoutlaw, e-mail James@team-outlaw.net, or call/text me at 830-688-1564.

Starting over all over again

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I apologize for the lack of photo updates here on Bandera.net. If you’ve spoken with me in person, you know why this is. If you haven’t, I’m not really at liberty to be candid with the details here on the Net.

As vaguely as I can explain it, I am no longer subsidizing the Bulletin’s photography budget with my professional equipment, and the newspaper has given me a broken point-and-shoot camera with which to shoot Bandera County sports for the foreseeable future.

If you want to know my feelings on this, don’t hesitate to ask.

I hope that the situation will change for the better in the near future, but from what I’ve been told, it’s highly unlikely. I think this is quite unfortunate.

Luckily there is some light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a number of very good local photographers who are shooting Bandera County sports as freelancers this year. Check out the work of Spencer Smith, Ken Lane and Rick Mender to get your sports photo fix.

And what of Bandera.net? Many good things are on the horizon. Bookmark away and come back often; what you’ll see here in the near future is unlike anything that’s graced the Internet landscape of Bandera County. Those of you who know me well know I don’t make such boasts without warrant.

Stay tuned – it’s about to get good!

Bandera vs. La Vernia

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Bandera fell 16-7 to La Vernia tonight in their varsity football season opener.

You can find all of my photos from the game over at BanderaBulletin.dotphoto.com.

Reportedly Bulldog QB Cole Hubble broke his nose in the game. He left with trainer Mary Bolan in the second quarter after taking a blow to the face. He scored Bandera’s only TD in the game on a long breakaway run.

I’ll have a full report from Coach Larry Prince for this week’s story in the Bulletin.

Want to weigh in on the game? Leave a comment below or drop me an e-mail to James@team-outlaw.net.

Bandera.net is undergoing some fun behind-the-scenes updates to content and delivery, so please excuse our infrequent updates. With Bandera County sports news in a lull over the summer, we’re taking this time to work on the backend of the site and get set up with some new features for sports fans.

I run Bandera.net as a public service to the Bandera County community to share online updates and information from my travels around the county as a sports editor and photojournalist for the Bandera Bulletin.

Just curious: Would you be interested in seeing commentary and perspective on newsworthy subjects outside of sports here at Bandera.net? Feel free to comment below, e-mail me, or give me a call or text to 830-688-1564.
