Bandera County Online News Roundup for July 21, 2010

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

(I was mostly off from the newspaper last week, so no new news photos to share. But I did have a great senior photo shoot with Medina High School graduate Leianna Rich, pictured above! You can view more of my portrait photography work at OutlawPhotography.net.)

Bandera County Top Stories

With National Day of the American Cowboy upon us, most of our editorial space in the Bulletin this week was dedicated to all the info you need to know to get the most of this summertime event put on by the Frontier Times Museum. Grab today’s copy of the Bulletin for full event calendar and previews of this weekend’s festivities.

My recent headline stories in the Bulletin include:

Other Bandera County News Snippets

You can read Buck Shannon’s often-updated blog from the Flying L Guest Ranch over on Blogspot.com.

Pioneer River Resort of Bandera co-manager Lloyd Randall is quoted in a July 14 article in Woodall’s Campground Management, “Heavy Rains Revive Texas Campground Business.”

Brick’s River Cafe in Bandera got a good 4/5 review over on Yelp.com on Monday. Ashley P. from Chico, Calif., says the Austin sandwich (one of my personal favorites) was awesome and her boyfriend enjoyed his “delicious” broccoli cheese soup and patty melt, but was jealous of a neighboring diner’s plate-sized chicken fried steak. When I “get a lil’ chicken fried” at Brick’s, I’m partial to the pork loin medallions, Texas smashed potatoes, and as always, fried okra.

Peggy and David Koehler blog this week about their to visit the Bandera area, and give Riverside RV Park here a glowing review. “NICE. $20 per night, full hookups, cable and free wifi, also right along the Medina River with miles of trails to walk… Cinder and I took full advantage in the early mornings and late evenings!”

Bandera was chosen by WalletPop.com as one of its “12 American towns with unusual claims to fame” for being the Cowboy Capital of The World.

Read a bit of history about the Sabinal River here in Bandera County over on the Wharton Journal Spectator’s web site.

The San Saba News & Star reports their local Church of Christ group visited Camp Bandina Youth Camp near Bandera earlier this month. Photos included!

Romantic fiction and creative non-fiction writer Pamela Thibodeaux blogged recently about her visit to the Silver Spur Guest Ranch here in Bandera. Her newest book, In His Sight, will be published this Friday.

The fine folks at TexasFishingForum.com share their tips for finding the big ones in Medina Lake.

Visit the Luckenbach General Store online to buy your genuine cowhide bottle koozie made by “friends in Bandera, Texas.”

Videos

Many thanks to YouTuber SSPitCrewBBQTeam for posting these videos this week of the Wife Carry event at the Medina Lake BBQ Cookoff. They are simply hilarious – I’ve never attended the Medina Lake BBQ before, but with entertainment like this, I don’t know how I could miss it.

YouTuber Chucky4Cheddar and family enjoyed some “Red Neck Water Sports” on Medina Lake this week.

Enjoy photos from the Shearrer Family’s recent visit to Medina Lake on their blog. Don’t miss the adorable toddler “making engine noises” on their boat!

Photos: Bandera High School Powder Puff Football game

Two facts: these girls are rough as bulldogs (appropriate!) and the final score was 35-28 favoring the seniors.

Welcome Back – or, Bandera Bulldogs vs. Ingleside Mustangs Photo Gallery posted

Missed me?

As you can see from the surrounding photos, headway has been made in the “camera situation” at the newspaper.

By hook or by crook, I’m back to making the best photos I’m capable of, my hands untied and camera gear ready to rock after a prolonged hibernation.

You can view all of my photos from yesterday’s Bandera Bulldogs vs. Ingleside Mustangs varsity football playoff game over at the Bulletin’s DotPhoto.com account or in the Bandera.net Photo Gallery (pro tip: Bandera.net is faster, the images are bigger and higher quality and you don’t need a degree in Computer Science just to look at them).

Below are some of my personal picks from the gallery. Let me know what you think: comment below, hit me up on Twitter @BanderaOutlaw, e-mail me at James@team-outlaw.net, or call/text me at 830-688-1564.

My friends, it is so good to be back.

Bandera QB Cole Hubble gets airplay on YouTube

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

You can check out video of Bandera Bulldogs starting quarterback Cole Hubble’s 105-yard punt return against the Lago Vista Vikings on YouTube courtesy of TexasPreps.net.

In January National Prep Network posted a junior-year highlight reel of Hubble from his 2008 season – to the tune of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” no less! You can see me on the sidelines with camera in hand in at least half the included clips. And of course Mrs. Sandy Jennings jumping and waving with every touchdown.

We need more video of Bulldog, Bobcat and Buffalo sports online!

Bandera Bulldogs featured in Austin American-Statesman

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

090930statesmanI’m a week behind, but I just came across the Austin American-Statesman’s coverage of the Bandera-Wimberley football game from Sept. 18.

Great write-up and a set of 10 very nice photos from Statesman intern Jordan Smothermon. He was working the sidelines hard throughout the game to get a set of 10 top-quality shots. I got to chat with him briefly and he said he has been a sports shooter since he first took up professional photography.

Where do you guys get your Bandera, Medina and Utopia sports story and photo fix? In the papers or online? Where? Leave a comment below on this blog post, hit me up on Twitter @banderaoutlaw, e-mail James@team-outlaw.net, or call/text me at 830-688-1564.

Medina vs. TMI

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

The Medina Bobcats fell to the TMI Panthers 53-14 in varsity football action last night, Sept. 4.

You can see all of my photos from the game at BanderaBulletin.dotphoto.com.

Bandera vs. La Vernia

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Bandera fell 16-7 to La Vernia tonight in their varsity football season opener.

You can find all of my photos from the game over at BanderaBulletin.dotphoto.com.

Reportedly Bulldog QB Cole Hubble broke his nose in the game. He left with trainer Mary Bolan in the second quarter after taking a blow to the face. He scored Bandera’s only TD in the game on a long breakaway run.

I’ll have a full report from Coach Larry Prince for this week’s story in the Bulletin.

Want to weigh in on the game? Leave a comment below or drop me an e-mail to James@team-outlaw.net.
